Florence is located in a large amphitheater shaped valley and is surrounded by the beautiful hills of Fiesole, Settignano, Arceri, Poggio Imperiale and Bellosguardo. The river Arno passes through Florence and onto Valdarno. Florence is known throughout the world as the start of the Renaissance and had many artists and world-renowned scientists such as Dante, Leonardo da Vinci (who created the masterpiece Mona Lisa), Raphael, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Brunelleschi and Galileo. The civil and religious architecture are as numerous as the works of art. The most famous places are Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Maria Novella, Uffizi Gallery, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Its symbol of Florence is a red lilly on white background.
